The current meter moorings are located approximately 10 feet below the surface at a lake level of 94.0 feet. The temperature recorders are small (3/4″ x 4″) devices and are located on existing anchors of boat moorings or navigation markers. - [Vermont Loons Are Studied at Night](https://harborwatch.com/vermont-loons-are-studied-at-night/): July 1999 In July and August, biologists will capture, band, and examine loons on several Vermont lakes in an effort to determine the loons’ overall health. Biologists will take blood and feather samples that will be analyzed to determine levels of mercury and lead in the loons. Mercury contamination of loons has caused increasing concern among biologists in recent years. Mercury levels in loons sampled in other New England states have so far been the highest ever recorded in the U.S. In Vermont last summer, loons and their eggs were tested for mercury on three ponds. - [Vermont gets permit to control cormorants](https://harborwatch.com/vermont-gets-permit-to-control-cormorants/): The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department received a federal permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service to begin spraying oil on Young Island’s cormorant eggs to help curb the bird’s exploding population on Lake Champlain. There are almost 2000 nests on Young Island in Grand Isle and the department has already oiled 650 of those nests. Although the department did not get permission to kill any birds, the plan is to continue oiling the eggs in hopes that this will begin to control the population. - [NY DEC Completes Cormorant Study on Lake Ontario](https://harborwatch.com/ny-dec-completes-cormorant-study-on-lake-ontario/): According to a study just completed by the NY Department of Environmental Conservation, declines in small mouth bass and other warm water species in the eastern basin of Lake Ontario is due to two factors. The increase in double crested cormorants and an decrease in alewives and change in distribution.The study also found that Cormorants are feeding on larger bass than first thought. Based on eleven studies conducted in 1998 on the cormorant’s feeding habitats that show that cormorants have a significant impact on warm water fish populations.
