Puritan colonist founded Boston, on September 17, 1630, not to be confused with the pilgrims who founded Plymouth colony. First incorporated as a town in 1630, and as a city in 1822, Boston is one of America’s oldest cities, with a rich social and economic history. Boston’s history is rich with famous people and events. The American Revolution, The Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and several early battles—including the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston—occurred in or near the city. During this period, Paul Revere made his famous midnight ride. Since the early days of Paul Revere Boston has become the economic and cultural example for New England.
As the region’s hub, Boston is home to nearly 590,000 residents, numerous colleges, some of the world’s finest hospitals, and numerous cultural and professional sports organizations.
